Prosthodontics is the dental specialty primarily concerned with repairing and/or replacement of lost or damaged teeth. Sometimes called the “architects of the smile,” prosthodontists are highly trained dental specialists with a unique understanding of all the elements that go into a beautiful, functional and natural-looking teeth–not just the teeth, but also the gums, lips, and facial features. When it comes to planning and carrying out a full-scale smile makeover, sometimes a team of dental professionals is required; many times, that team is led by a prosthodontist.

Prosthodontics is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. This dental specialty focuses on the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth or oral tissues. Prosthodontics can include replacing missing teeth, restoring irregular or damaged teeth, and more. In short, a prosthodontist works to restore and enhance the way that your smile looks and functions. In many cases, a prosthodontist acts as the “quarterback” in dental treatment plans. A prosthodontist often leads a team of general dentists, specialists and other health professionals in finding solutions to dental problems and needs.

In prosthodontics, the goal of tooth replacement and restoration is both functional and aesthetic. In addition to replacing missing teeth and restoring damaged or irregular teeth, prosthodontists also attend to the special needs of geriatric patients, care for children born with cleft palate or missing teeth and provide TMJ treatment. Prosthodontists receive three additional years of formal, intense training beyond regular dental school to care for a wide range of dental needs, from children born with genetic facial defects to patients who require rehabilitation after a traumatic injury.
