Immediate Care After Surgery
During the first 24 hours, focus on protecting the extraction site and controlling bleeding. Some bleeding is normal, but it should gradually decrease.
- Gently bite down on a clean piece of gauze for 45 to 60 minutes to help stop bleeding
- Replace gauze as needed, making sure it stays in place with light pressure
- Keep your head elevated to minimize bleeding and swelling
- Avoid physical activity that may raise your heart rate
Oral Hygiene & Comfort
The extraction site is delicate, and gentle care is necessary to prevent infection or dry socket.
- Do not rinse your mouth or spit on the day of your surgery
- After 48 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water several times daily
- Continue brushing and flossing, but avoid the extraction site until fully healed
- Apply ice packs for the first 24 to 48 hours to reduce swelling
- Take medications as prescribed, and contact our office if you experience an allergic reaction or unusual discomfort
Diet & Lifestyle During Healing
Nutrition and lifestyle choices play an important role in your recovery.
- Stick to a soft food diet that is high in protein for the first several days
- Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid straws as suction may dislodge the clot
- Refrain from smoking for at least several days, as it increases the risk of infection and dry socket
- Be patient, as complete healing takes time and may require a follow-up appointment with your prosthodontists
