Immediate Care After Surgery

The first 24 hours after your procedure are very important for proper healing. Avoid rinsing, spitting or touching the surgical site to prevent irritation. Light bleeding is normal, but if it persists, gently bite down on a clean gauze pad until it subsides.
To minimize discomfort and swelling:

  • Begin prescribed medications and pain relievers as directed before the anesthetic wears off
  • Apply ice packs to the affected area for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 48 hours
  • Keep your head slightly elevated when resting to reduce swelling

Oral Hygiene & Diet

Maintaining cleanliness is essential, but it must be done gently. Starting the day after surgery, rinse your mouth lightly with warm salt water unless otherwise instructed. Resume brushing your teeth carefully, avoiding the implant site until it heals fully.
For comfort and healing:

  • Eat soft foods and avoid chewing directly on the implant area
  • Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid using straws as suction may disrupt healing
  • Do not smoke for at least two weeks, as this increases the risk of complications

Ongoing Healing & Care

Healing times vary, but following these guidelines will help ensure success:

  • Refrain from wearing dentures, night guards or removable appliances for at least 10 days after surgery unless instructed otherwise
  • Switch from ice packs to warm compresses after 48 hours if swelling continues
  • Keep all follow-up appointments so your prosthodontists can monitor healing and implant stability
